Vengeance (Originally Published 4/19/2023)

I just finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Written in France in 1844 by Alexander Dumas, the book is 1265 pages long and exquisitely written.

The Count of Monte Cristo is a tale of Edmond, who, by way of a perfect storm of three men, one each possessed of greed, lust and jealousy, manage to have Edmond arrested at his engagement party and quickly imprisoned for an act of treason he did not commit.

Edmond spent 14 years in the dungeon of an island prison, where he escaped through some imaginative and twisty turns after one of his fellow inmates, whom all thought mad, revealed the location of a huge fortune. Edmond found the fortune and began to cleverly plot his revenge on the three men responsible for his long, undeserved incarceration.

Due to his newfound and excessive wealth that was hidden in a cave on the island of Monte Cristo, Edmond declared himself the Count of Monte Cristo. Nine-tenths of the 1265 pages were dedicated to the revelation of Monte Cristo's revenge. The three men responsible for Edmond’s misery had themselves created great wealth. Every detail and nuance of Monte Cristo’s life was dedicated to ruining the lives of the men who ruined him.

In the last chapter of the book, Monte Cristo reveals that in the course of his revenge-seeking, he lost himself in the darkness and, for all intent and purpose, was himself ruined. He had no family, no wife, and no purpose really but to bring darkness to the three men and their families for the past ten years.

The last three words of the book were …wait and hope. Edmond discovered that while playing God himself, he didn't leave any room for God to provide him with those basic needs of love, peace, friends, etc. Better, Edmond says to wait and hope that people get returned to them what they put out rather than be the instrument of their ruin. A basic tenet of truth for life on Earth.

It has been a week since I finished The Count of Monte Cristo. I am still reeling from the message that took 1265 pages to get to. I hope my time invested will also return to you a great and valuable lesson.

AFFIRMATION: I forgive all wrongs that I have endured with a wait-and-hope attitude.
