Self-Nurturing Ideas

When I work in my garden, I know that a certain part of me, mentally and emotionally, is being nurtured in a way unlike any other experience I can have. The last half of my life has seen me spend untold hours in my garden.
Nurturing is defined as giving one a sense of inner security and emotional strength, which are gifts from parenting. In order to offer inner security and emotional strength to children, one needs to be proficient in these qualities themselves. That would require being a perfect human. Can any of you respond to the call of being a perfect human? Thought not.
Do not despair, however, we weren't created perfect, but we were created on a perfect planet. As such, it is possible for each and every living creature on Earth to consciously change a habit or two that would lend itself to self-nurturing. First, however, let’s define those things we do that are not nurturing and even anti-nurturing. Humans do this on all levels: mentally, emotionally, physically and of course, spiritually.
On a mental and/or emotional level, sustained/long term feelings of anger, fear, jealousy, hatred, revenge and guilt, to name a few, are definitely self-effacing; anti-nurturing. Smoking, eating processed foods, not drinking enough water, and eating too much fat or sugar are all anti-nurturing events for the physical body. Disbelief in a power greater than yourself, ignoring totems or miracles as they appear are spiritually anti-nurturing events. Still with me, oh imperfect human?
Unconscious woundings experienced in the past are usually the root cause of anti- or un-nurturing behaviors. Woundings are learning tools of the Soul to help one change lanes and seek out respite from the past so that the future can be better for you, those around you and ultimately the collective. As we mature, evolve and grow, the collective also moves a notch on the spectrum.
One of my personal wounds is the way my parents were always criticizing an accomplishment I achieved while under their domain of influence. "You're the clumsiest cheerleader out there," and "your friends aren't really your friends" come to mind. To back up my low self-worth, I experienced and internalized a lot of physical abuse.
Until I was twenty-eight, I felt like I lived in a fog. Then I began to nurture myself with books designed to speak to my self-esteem. I became a real estate broker and surged to the top of my game. I attended a variety of religious institutions on Sundays, which presented me with ideas I had never thought about. The wounds still exist, but instead of them being ugly scars on my psyche, they remind me of how far I have grown through self-nurturing.
If you are reading this, you are old enough to self-nurture yourself. No one else is going to – in fact, no one is programmed to nurture another unless it's a parent, and like most mammals, nurturing of the young is short-lived unless you had helicopter parents who over-nurtured, which can be just as damaging as the opposite, if not more so.
Nurturing is the taking care of oneself. What aspect of you has been ignored, still wounded or needs transformation? Stop, pick your own personalized wounding and shed some healing light on it. Ask for guidance to become empowered emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually . Ask and you shall receive!
AFFIRMATION: I give myself empowering permission to self-nurture.
