Oh, Say Can You See?

The starting words of our Star-Spangled Banner, written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key as he was watching the British Bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, still resonate today. Let us take Key’s words to an even deeper level. While written during a battle, the words “Oh say can you see” can, on a much more personal level, implore one to see the truth of a situation with one's own eyes.

            Not someone else’s ideology of truth but your very own truth. Each and every one of us is beautifully wired with the art of discernment. Discernment is DNA encoded so that one can figure out for themselves what is true and what isn’t. The secret? Ponder a question and then pray for the truth. The result may take days, even months, but if one is intent on truth, Universe will comply.

            Do you see a cup as half empty or half full? The truth is reflected in both visions, but the version of the truth you select will produce after its kind. Half empty implies loss. Half full implies gain. One can’t be sure what American lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key was truly discerning in his Star-Spangled Banner, but we can be sure his message is still one of freedom and truth 208 years later.

            I literally tear up when the Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem, is played at a sporting event or political event. Perhaps I see what Key saw, a land of Freedom for all, regardless of our differences. This I know for sure. I was lucky enough to be born 75 years ago in the freest country on the planet. I choose to see our country as free and prosperous.

            What can you see? It’s okay to hold OUR country up to the light. Do it. Every person who holds our country up in God’s light, regardless of our temporary divisiveness will become part of the solution with an awesome power to be a bringer of light.

            Happy 250 years, America!
