Columbus Truth

Countries hoarding or blocking trade routes is really nothing new. During the 15th century, 1453 to be exact, the Ottoman Empire, located in what is now known as modern-day Turkey on the Asian continent, blocked overland trade routes to Asia. This meant that countries in Europe were cut off from imports of spices, silk and highly coveted gold. And in line with one of my favorite mantras, “what man uses from evil, God uses for good,” the Ottoman blockade was the impetus for Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America.
Columbus finally obtained financing to follow a dream he had to find an alternative trade route to the Ottoman blockade in 1492. Think about that. Columbus accidentally (if there is such a thing) spotted the shores of a Bahamian island, after two months of sailing, on three small ships containing 90 crew members. Faulty maps led Columbus to incorrectly believe he had found Asia, where spices could be had, before exploring Cuba and Haiti. He returned to his Spanish sponsors, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II and reported his incorrect find.
Columbus died in 1506, never actually discovering America. Seriously? Why does America even have a Columbus Day then? In fact, even Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer whom it is said that America is named after, never set foot on America’s shores either.
To be honest here, somewhere I wrote a note to myself to write a blog about Columbus and Columbus Day. My research, however, informed me that I was taught misinformation growing up; that it’s BS that “Columbus sailed the ocean blue…” Remember that little jingle one learned in elementary school?
Now I’m wondering what other lies have been perpetrated in my psyche growing up?! Why was historical data so vague back in the sixties? Truth be told, North America’s first settlers were Asians who crossed the Bering Land Bridge around fifteen thousand years ago. Are we feeding our kids untruth today that might traumatize them in their old age, as I’m now feeling traumatized by the Columbus lie?
Alas, Columbus does have a claim to fame, however, that I would like to share. Although he never found the Spice Islands of Asia he was searching for, nor the shores of our country, Columbus was responsible for letting the world know that there was a Western Hemisphere. Knowledge of this new large land mass outside of Europe altered history, trade and politics. Coined the Columbian Exchange, Columbus’ discovery of new trade opportunities was the connection between the worldly transfer of everything from plants, culture, disease, and technology between countries, said by AI to “trigger huge demographic shifts across our planet.”
Next Monday is Columbus Day. Give Mr. Columbus his due for informing the world of new trade opportunities. Thank you, Chris! However, it might just be time to think back about other untruths that have been banging around in that brain of yours that are just not true. Dedicate the day to discovering one truth you did not know.
The time spent in discovery could be life-changing. Columbus had a passion for truth. May his obsession for truth still linger on his day of days and into your own psyche.
