Worry was defined by Dale Carnegie (1888 – 1955), an expert on the subject, as one focusing too much concern on themselves. The very foundation of worry…what if? What if? What if? Letting one’s imagination develop a plethora of scenarios about the possibility of a bleak future leads one down a path of self-doubt, separation from God’s plan, and a life of not enjoying the present moments we have been blessed with.
Modern science now knows that fret and worry lead to dis-ease of all the working parts, mental, emotional and physical of the human being. Chronic worry leads to a breakdown of all human processes, such as indigestion, blood flow and immune system compromise, to name a few.
Everyone worries at times in their lives. Some more than others. Some never stop. If worry and anxiety are a comfort zone for you, happy life! Stop reading this, and go get yourself a margarita. For the rest of us, I’d like to propose a visual that one might be able to call upon in their darkest hours. My beautiful neighbor Wendy related the following story to me about her son.
A new dad, we will call him Michael because that’s his name, so loved his newborn daughter that he googled to look for the most popular thoughts that people use to help reduce or eliminate worry and anxiety. Michael comes from an “anxious” family and does not wish to pass the “worry gene” to his daughter. Believe it or not, there ARE things one can do to mentally, emotionally and physically help one “stop worrying and start living,” as quoted by Dale Carnegie. Michael discovered that there were three sayings that could help one to focus away from thoughts of worry and anxiety; 1) You’re okay, 2) You’ll be fine 3) Just breathe.
Michael arranged the three counter-worry statements into a catchy musical jingle: “Hey, you’re okay, you’ll be fine, just breathe.” My neighbor Wendy, admittedly an anxiety queen, sang the jingle to me while forming her arms as if cradling a baby, looking at the empty cavity in her folded arms with a grandmother’s love. Wendy told me her son sings that song constantly to his beautiful new daughter, Addy. Lucky girl that Addy is! Her daddy is planting seeds of anti-worry and anti-anxiety in Addy’s subconscious mind that Addy will be able to call upon when faced with an opportunity to worry.
It's not too late for the rest of us to create an “auto-pilot” way to transform worry into calm. Imagine, if you would for a moment, a beautiful newborn baby cradled in your arms. It’s now YOUR job to sing the jingle (out loud) to that baby with all the love you can muster… over and over and over. If you do these enough times, when worry or anxiety rears its ugly head, that catchy little jingle may just surface, and peace will reign in you.
Who doesn’t want that?
Worry, anxiety and the like are just other human emotions that exist on Earth that the spirit-being-having-a-human experience is opportune to transform. The Easter/spring message is transformation. Why let a good opportunity to transform worry into a belief system that says, “Hey, I’m OK. I’ll be fine. Just breathe,” slip your mind?
P.S. If you have a tendency to worry about others, put their face in the crux of your arms and sing the “Hey, I’m okay” song to them. Worry NEVER helps the other person, but when you sing to them, YOUR worry ceases to infect them.
AFFIRMATION: I am worry-free.
