There's a New Weed In Town (Originally Published 9/28/2021)

I have been gardening close to thirty years.  Like most everything I do, I reach for the sky.  My flower, plant and tree gardens are exquisite.  Many guests and visitors have enjoyed the gardens’ beauty which brings me great pleasure.

(Did you think this blog was about Marijuana?  Ha-ha)

My garden is divided into seven sections.  Beautiful gardens (like a beautiful house or a beautiful body) take time and attention.  I am the sole gardener.  It takes me one day to spruce up each section giving me the opportunity to “be” in the garden where nothing else matters.  To me, gardening is my grounding place.  One year, in fact, I was embroiled in a huge familial issue.  I spent the entire summer reconstructing my rock garden around my ever-growing willow tree.  By the end of that project (and summer) I had come to a place of forgiveness for all of the cast members of that dark familial scene in my personal opportunity to learn self-love.

My biggest issue in the garden is weeds.  My husband finally convinced me to mulch half of the bare ground in my garden but to me, mulch is no match for the beauty of a bed of raked dirt, free of weeds. Every once in a while, there will appear a new weed that I’ve never seen before.  As you may imagine, I am very intimate with my weeds.  Some weeds pull out easily. Others require tools to dig out.  You begin to recognize the characteristics of each type of weed when pulling them up. If you don’t get the entire root on the first pull, you are pulling the same weed out over and over.  There is one type of weed that is so clever that it grows a lateral “feeder” vein that requires a shovel to remove the weed root. Like a surgeon, I must follow the vein from the beginning to the end (several weeds have, sprouted from the feeder vein), sometimes running twenty feet.  Gee, I wonder how many life issues I’ve worked at without getting to the “root” of the issue.

Working in the garden offers many metaphors for life, and this year was no different.  This year’s garden message was a reminder to me of the presence of Infinite Intelligence. Infinite Intelligence is said to be the complete energy that exists in the universe that manifests in many different forms enabling all things to exist (and persist) in a particular order. I’ve always been amazed at the survival intelligence weeds have. Did you know that some weed seeds can lie in the ground before germinating for up to 2000 years? Like virus intelligence with the ability to mutate, I have observed one of my weeds actually alter its root system to survive me and Preen, the pre-emergent weed killer I use.  Let me explain:

About five years ago, I noticed a weed I had never encountered before. Its roots were relatively easy to eradicate without tools.  The weed was tall with one long root, and if I gripped the weed at its base, the root would slither right out.  This year, however, I noticed several characteristics had changed about this weed.  Before you think I’m crazy, even weeds have their own identifying leaves.  The new version of the old weed still had its long stem into the ground.  However, the weed had managed to add a very, very fine series of small roots that easily disconnect from the root system when I pull the weed out leaving fine “hairs” that manage to propagate the weed.  Really??  Infinite Intelligence is available to a weed?

So if Infinite Intelligence exists in weeds.   .   .   .

Affirmation – Infinite Intelligence works in me; I need only listen.
