Personal Weaknesses (Originally Published 8/9/2022)

I remember a TV program called Kung Fu with David Carradine. David played Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who traveled America’s “old west” between 1871-1875, armed with his spiritual training and martial art skills while looking for his long-lost half-brother. The program was designed around flashbacks of Caine’s upbringing in a Shaolin Monastery after he became orphaned. Caine was always challenged between the spiritual wisdom of his monastic upbringing and the human urges we all face like anger, fear, revenge, greed.… Caine would ultimately revert to his spiritual training when facing the challenges of each episode.

Reverting to innate spiritual guidelines in every situation was the theme of every Kung Fu episode. Caine was always at odds with his personal weaknesses.

Sound familiar? Whoever wants to face their personal weaknesses? Truth is, personal weaknesses are the very thing we are on the planet to overcome even if one doesn’t wish to be a sensei or spiritual master. In fact, if you’re reading this (in other words, upright and breathing) it is proof positive that you have personal weaknesses that need upgrading and rebooting.

So, how do we discover (without denial and defending) what our personal weaknesses are? Without delving into one’s own weaknesses one can never hope to achieve their highest potential. More so, if one ignores the very purpose for their existence, to master their weaknesses then harmonious relationships, life achievements, and a life free of misfortunes will always be elusive.

Admitting one’s weaknesses is no easy task! Who we see in the mirror is not usually who we really are. However, when we look into the “mirror” of those spirits around us, often times we can, with a lot of inner truthfulness, begin to see our own personal weaknesses that need transforming.

Psychologists and spiritual sages alike will tell you to pay heed to the thoughts you have about those that surround you when looking into your own human psyche. Sure, I’m talking about friends, family, and coworkers but what about writers, baseball players, TV personalities, ministers, politicians, and artists? Listen to what you have to say about them if you really want to zero in on your personal weaknesses that need evolving?

Assignment: Make a list of ten people who you hear yourself ragging (complaining, judging, disliking) about. Next to their name write down one or two words that best describes what you don’t like about them. Things like, they don’t listen; don’t know what they are talking about; think they know everything. Disorganized. Loud. Rude. Disrespectful. There are at least one million adjectives in the human language that one can draw from for this exercise. With this list, you have just discovered ten of your personal weaknesses. Voilà! That simple.

What we are able to see about others indicates both our strengths AND weaknesses. Now that you’ve hit the weaknesses jackpot, the big question is, what are you going to do about it? I suggest that you pick the most blatant weakness and begin to consciously convert the weakness into a strength. Imagine how powerful and learned one could become if they listened more than they talked. Envision a world where every situation you are in is filled with loving, kind, compassionate people? When one’s weaknesses have dissipated, the only people we will even see or connect with are more light-filled beings since there is no longer a need for one’s weaknesses to be revealed to them.

Each and every being on Earth is born with potential for virtues, free of weakness. Caine’s struggles on Kung Fu were ALWAYS about overcoming personal weakness – one at a time. Art imitates life. Your life journey is exactly what you make it.

What are you waiting for?
