Never Too Late (Originally Published 7/9/2021)

Neighbor John’s mom began her descent into ill health and frailty three months ago.  Unable to walk anymore but still with a very sound mind caused Irene to believe that life was over as she knew it.  After all, at 98 years of age what could you expect?

John, a devoted son, finally acquiesced to Mom’s pleas to NOT put her into a nursing home even though she needed attention 24/7.  So, bachelor of 33 years John moved Mom into his spare bedroom and hired around the clock help.  Mom continued to decline as everyone expected.  After 21 days at John’s house, both John and Mom were miserable.  John went from one to three occupants in his small home — a lot to adjust to after 33 years of living alone.

Mom must have sensed John’s displeasure because on day 22 at her new place of residence Mom asked to go to the hospital where it was discovered Mom’s lungs were filled with excess fluid and her heart was also encumbered by excess water.  After a medical procedure to drain the excess fluid, Mom felt like a new woman and was ready to return to John’s house.  John however had different ideas.  He knew that bringing Mom back to his house would only repeat an unhealthy journey for Mom.  Gently, John told Mom that he didn’t feel her being cooped up in a room at his house was healthy for her.

When John’s mom first lost the use of her legs, physical therapists told her that if she worked hard at physical therapy, she would qualify for admittance to an assisted living facility.  Mom had decided she was NOT going to any facility so decided not to give any effort to physical therapy.  Her lack of any movement is what allowed the drastic fluid buildup in her body.  Organs stop working when the physical movement so badly needed to charge organs up has stopped.

While still in the hospital post fluid removal surgery, physical therapy was again suggested. Mom went at the physical therapy full steam ahead. John couldn’t believe the tremendous shift in his mother’s attitude.  What had happened?

After two weeks, Mom made a miraculous recovery and because of the excellent physical therapy she worked so hard at, she finally qualified to be moved to an assisted living facility where she would no longer be a burden to John and John’s household.

John finally asked his mother what had happened to her to cause her to make a 180 degree change in her health and attitude?  Mom quite simply said, “the second day I was in the hospital this overwhelming feeling came over me and I heard.  .   .  If you want to enjoy this last journey of your life you better choose to decide to change your attitude about physical therapy and give life all you’ve got.  And so, she did.  Imagine that!  Ninety-eight years old and still able to create strong impacting intentions.

Today Mom is a resident of a beautiful, assisted living facility with oversight care, food, people to play cards with and some form of independence.

Damn!  98 and still able to change her mind to shift outcomes.

What’s in your mind that could use a little adjusting to achieve a more light-filled outcome?
