Those Evolutionary Weeds

I'd like to write a book about weeds someday, but I'm not sure it would become a bestseller, every author's ultimate dream. I've been gardening for over thirty-five years and often earn a "wink" from the local garden club over my well-manicured and flowered yard. The design was relatively easy. Maintenance of my garden – not so much. My biggest garden enemy? Weeds!

            Besides the spiders, mice and rabbits that are ongoing pests, it's the weeds, no, it's those damn weeds that keep me in garden gloves and on my knees twenty hours each week. Just when I think I've licked every weed in my garden, a new variety pops up and I have to discover its MO in order to eradicate it.

            Did you know that some weeds can survive up to 2,000 years? What was God thinking? Did you know that there are almost 400,000 species of plants worldwide, with 2,000 new species being discovered each year? I could not find the exact number of weed species, but in my yard alone, I can identify 42. And each year, I discover at least one new variety.

            Weeds are simply plants growing where they are not wanted. They produce quickly, especially in my garden. Of course, most weeds eventually flower, making them "bee friendly". However, weeds can also damage crops, landscapes and grasses, which is the rub.

            Why a book on weeds? Truth is, it is with my weeds that I recognize many powerful human traits: resilience, endurance, evolution. That's right! Evolution. My young, sage-like grandson recently said, and I quote, "weeds, if they are growing, they are evolving." That wise statement gave me a moment of pause. My weeds are certainly evolving!  Am I?

            Am I rising above old limiting ideas that no longer serve my health, wealth and happiness? Am I recognizing Soul's gentle urges into new thoughts that are trusting, faith-filled and loving about myself and others? Do I stand tall in what’s true or shrivel to the back of the pack because it’s easier? Has my spirit morphed into a light-filled or shadow-filled being?

            If the least of us, God's heavenly weeds, are in fact evolving – and I can guarantee from personal experience we are – then certainly the human species is as well. The question is, is the human species resisting? Is that what all this world chaos is about? Are you on the yellow brick road to higher learning?

            The only evolution that really matters is the innate urge towards Love that every living being on Earth is imbued with. There are many ancillary qualities that can move the human species evolutionarily in Love's direction: forgiveness, compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, understanding, generosity, forgiveness, selflessness, truth, and did I mention forgiveness? Pick one. Make it your life mission to be an example of this quality. Evolve yourself and the planet.

            Whew! I'm hoping I have heard the "message of the weeds" loud and clear and that my presenting it to you all will make my garden weeds leave me alone. It's unlikely, but I think the Book of Weeds idea has been satisfied.
