Going From Bad to Good (Originally Published 2/15/2023)

What you are looking at is a green Florida iguana. Iguanas are not a native Florida species. As you can see from the picture, iguanas have a great resemblance to legendary dragons as they host a row of spikes down their neck, back and tail. Mystical in a way.

The rub is that the non-native, invasive reptile with a 10-year life span in the wild is extremely destructive to vegetation, including fruits and flowers. Iguanas, whose females can lay anywhere from 15 to 75 eggs per year, cannot tolerate cold temperatures, limiting their migratory spread to the deep south. The excessive and out-of-control iguana population digs burrows that erode sea walls, sidewalks, porches, decks and pool walls. Iguanas have decimated the host food plant of the endangered Miami Blue Butterfly and can also transmit infectious bacteria to humans. Iguanas have no natural predators. The green iguana is native to Central and South America only.

In my world, if something “is,” it is at the hands of God. Thankfully, Florida is recognizing the IIWII principle (it is what it is) and reversing the iguana’s “nuisance species” classification. That’s quite a switch going from being categorized as a nuisance species to being recognized as an important part of an ecosystem they are not even native to! Scientists are now coming to understand the vital role iguanas actually play in the Florida Keys ecosystem (they must have some divine role, or why else would they be here?)

Iguana eggs provide food for birds and mammals. They also control insect and pest populations. This all made me wonder where in my life could I change or reverse something I’ve categorized as a “nuisance” to instead consider the “nuisance” a vital or needed role in my life. Never one to waste an idea presented to me by one of my photographic adventures, I set out on a mental journey to examine the so-called “nuisances” in my life.

Pelican poop, for one. We live in an easterly wind shear effect that causes the visiting pelicans to fly within inches of our second-floor deck. I’ll let your imagination run with this one except to say that pelican poop, if left for more than 1 day, becomes a permanent decoration on the deck which causes a nuisance. I can sit and joyfully watch those pelicans fly within 3 feet of my nose for hours. Now I will appreciate EVERYTHING that goes with my close proximity pelican observation.

Overall, it is people and their idiosyncrasies that most often provide irritable nuisances to most of us. The TV broadcaster whose tongue whips out to moisten his lips after every other sentence. People who still wear masks. Corrupt politicians. Noisy neighbors. Condo rules. Thieves. Well, I hope your nuisance imagination doesn’t get as dark as mine just did.

Having passed through the Easter message recently, the words of the great master prophet, Jesus, lit up like a bright morning sunshine to remind me to “forgive those annoyances, for they know not what they do.” In order for me to accomplish that, I have to look on whatever annoying human spirit angsting me at the moment and give it a different meaning. But first, I have to look into my own list of annoying behaviors (I am a little bossy) and see if I can stop annoying people with my bossiness.

Here's a Universal Law…to the extent I am annoyed by others, I am annoying. Ok. We all have flaws. I think I am going to take the iguana message and pray that, in the eyes of others, they see my bossiness in a different light and recategorize my bossiness as necessary for their ecosystem. That’s a stretch, I know. I promise to help by working on my bossiness.

What flaw (stubbornness, anger, resentfulness, fear) could you get recategorized in the eyes of others? It is never too late to move in the right direction. The green Florida iguana did it without much effort. Imagine with a little effort what you could do!

Just sayin’!

AFFIRMATION: As I shift my own behavior, I become more at peace with my environment.
