This morning I woke up to the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic” playing in my head. You know the one. . .
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the faithful lightning of his terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
As a writer, I take every Soul guided message I get as a “jump on it” directive. The back story is quite powerful. Even though written over 160 years ago, its message seems even more timely today.
Fraughtfully troubled at the growing hostilities between the north and south (today it’s the red and blue) an author and poet named Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was apparently a “channel for the Universe” as she “scrawled the verses to the song as they popped in her head almost without looking at paper.” After being published in The Atlantic Magazine in 1862 – the entire country (meaning both red and blue) united in signing this Hymn. Any song about God sung by the masses can only be good.
We may not be in a civil war right now (or are we?) but many folks of all persuasions are in fear, anger,, spiteful, hateful, yada, yada over the upcoming election. Collectively, we are a loving people. Ms. Ward’s Hymn can provide an emotional “settling” to many. In fact, singing the Battle Hymn in one’s mind can actually bring thoughts of peace and calm.. I think that’s the message I’m supposed to pass along right now.
There are a total of five verses in the Hymn. The last one I find the most poignant:
In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me. As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free. While God is marching on.
If you're like me right now, I just want to stay centered through this election cycle. Regardless of what side one is on; what color wins in November, it will still be by God's hand. God's truth is the only truth. God's plan is the only plan. God is marching on and I intend to still be a light centered being come November 6th.
Try singing Ms. Howe's reminder of the mighty protector of our Earth every day to anchor the truth of "God's got this" not only in your own mind but your faith, whether spoken or not, will inspire those around you by example, the only true form of teaching and change.
His truth WILL be marching on...through you!
