Life Force

            Technically speaking, life force (small l, small f) is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as the force or influence that gives something its vitality or strength. Science tells us that it is the 22 elements from the Periodic Table, like calcium, magnesium, manganese, etc., that are the force that vitalizes and strengthens the human body. Are minerals the life force spiritualists are referring to?

            Three thousand years ago, the word "prana" was first referenced as life force in the Yogic tradition. Prana is translated as "life force energy; the breath of life." Does that make oxygen a life force?

            Max Planck, the developer of Quantum Theory, provides a mystical definition of life force as the ubiquitous information field that sustains all life, an invisible force. Traditional Chinese medicine tells us that Qi (pronounced "chi") is cultivated energy from the jing (energy) one is born with and shen (energy) that is cultivated through mindful living. West Africans are of the belief that Nyama, the life force, is an impartial, pure power that inhabits all living things. Russians define life force as an atmosphere or energy field surrounding a living being. Finally, my favorite, the ancient Mayan culture, declares life force as the animating principle of life.

            I don't know about you, but all I see are different descriptions of God. So I am concluding (and I'm hoping you will join me) that the last and final spiritual app of the twelve spiritual apps (Faith, Order, Zeal, Strength, Love, Spoken Word, Imagination, Wisdom, Understanding, Will, and Release), Life Force is an undefinable, ungraspable presence that powers all of life that is too omnipotent for full understanding.

            At least that's what I'm thinking at the moment, and I'm sticking to it.

AFFIRMATION: Pure life force flows through me and powers my mind, body, and spirit.
