From Shadow to Light

Updated: Jul 18

I waited almost two months for an appointment with the IRS. Apparently, my bookkeeper was sending the money that was due, but never followed up with the correct forms. There were so many reporting issues (almost 40 different issues, to be exact) that needed attention, I thought a two-hour appointment would be helpful to clear them up. I literally spent 60 hours organizing every file (issue) with supporting documentation. My visit with Miss "C" at the IRS  included two large boxes of data I lugged around. In fact, I had so much documentation that my husband accompanied me to Detroit's Federal Building to help carry it.

I was told to be fifteen minutes early for my 8:30 appointment but I’m not sure why – the doors did not open until exactly 8:30 and Miss C did not come for us until 8:45. Wise to the trap of anger “potential” for me being early and them being disrespectfully late, I refused to trigger.

I saw a black woman come to the reception desk to see who her first appointment (us) was. It was as if my mind heard, "Oh great, an old white couple with boxes…lucky me." Again, I refused to trigger from what I felt she was feeling. I heard my mantra, "God, what am I to learn and bring to this experience? How am I to resonate? Questions to the great “I AM” are extremely helpful when in conscious change mode.

Walking into Miss C's cubicle felt like I had just entered the "Twilight Zone." She was protected by plastic COVID shields and crammed us into a very small but clean area for ourselves and all our boxes. After a brief introduction and explanation of the backstory, Miss C informed us that she was not trained in "business issues" for the IRS, but would at least listen and gather information. Deep breath.

I asked if she could bring up on her computer the tax years and quarters that were still a problem, and she said that was not possible, so I went through twenty folders, one by one, for the first company offering any documentation I had in defense of my position, which she blankly piled up to eventually copy. However, I was patient, friendly and prayerful. Especially prayerful. Again… “God, what am I to garner from this experience?”

Then it was as if a miracle had occurred. When we opened the files for company number two, the fifty-five-ish Miss C went to her computer, which instantly revealed the issues and their respective quarters. So, instead of twenty folders, we only needed to visit four folders, and for the third company, only three folders needed addressing.

By the time we were done, we knew all about Miss C’s family, travels and career. She complimented me up one side and down the other about how organized I was –“ like she’d never seen before”! She complimented the great support my husband provided. We even joked about her thoughts when she saw the “old white couple laden with boxes,” my seeing that in her eyes and how lovely everything worked out.

The warm handshakes we all shared felt like the hugs we might have shared, had it not been for the plastic COVID  shield. Miss C had become our friend. She gave me great advice on how to resolve my IRS issue, and we shared some valuable insights about life.

Two opposing forces collided in a small cubicle, and light was the product. When we left, my husband and I were walking on clouds. We had just experienced a light-filled change. Miss C will never see "old white people with boxes" the same, and we will never see a female black IRS employee the same.

I would say that was a pretty good result for all the grief and time I have put into finding a resolution to so many issues. But then again, is there really any other thing to do in life but to be the harbinger of light?

AFFIRMATION: I bring light everywhere I go.
