What Might Have Been…

Updated: 4 days ago

It has been twenty years since I boarded an airplane. My bestie's husband died suddenly, which prompted my immediate attendance some 1800 miles south. The flight down shocked me! First, there were three or four divisions of "comfort levels" you could purchase. How does DEI feel about that? Secondly, everything was so high-tech, from boarding passes to a plethora of choices of entertainment on the "chair back"; from movies to TV, to simply watching a map showing the route our plane was taking and where we were on that route.

On the way to my destination, I was most amazed at how everyone "cocooned" themselves in their 2.4' space away from their neighbors. I've had some pretty awesome experiences in the air over my many "flight" years. I traveled for business and pleasure and would estimate that I took at least fifty round-trip flights back in the day. This time, both coming and going, there was zero communication from any of the four seatmates around me, all temporarily sharing the same destination.

Except for the last 120 seconds of my return flight.

The gentleman on my right had opened his computer to a Johns Hopkins website. Aha! Probably a doctor. That assumption didn't last long when he turned off his computer and pulled out a small pamphlet, the title of which I didn't catch, but he had handwritten notes all over it. (I'm not nosey, just observant if you must know.)

The return flight was just short of three hours, and neither of my seatmates indicated any desire for socializing, so I watched a movie. Yes! Curiosity killed this cat, who, two minutes after the messaging of return your tray tables to their upright position and the fasten your seat belt sign was re-engaged, asked the doctor, "Are you a writer?" He replied, "Yes, I'm a pediatric hematologist. But I promised myself that I would write, as writing was always my first love, but I was pretty sure I couldn't support a family on a writer's income, so I became a doctor." For almost three hours, I just sat next to a spirit-being-having-a-human-experience who identifies as one of my soul mates. That is, people whose spirits are on the same journey. I always had the inclination to write, even when I was younger. In fact, I did write some things for my "earning trade", which was commercial real estate, over the years that were published in multiple trade magazines.

My doctor co-rider specializes in blood clots in children. My bestie's husband died of multiple blood clots. There was so much I could have shared, but after the doc settled in, he immediately tucked in a couple of ear buds, so I got the hint. What's happened over the last twenty years? Did COVID take away the human desire to connect, even for just three hours, to a new human frequency? I once changed the life of a little ten-year-old girl flying by herself to see her father on a flight, and she changed mine.

Are the days of the one-on-one human connection over? I would say that the extreme high-tech energy that the world is experiencing these days would require an even higher human connection or "touch" if we are to survive as a species. An Airbus, full of spirit beings, all with the same destination for at least three hours, is no accident. Sequestering ourselves with earbuds almost feels like separating ourselves from God…well, at least from something adventurous.

To me, this is a warning. I'm committing now to be more aware of my role on this planet: to be a channel of Light. To learn and share my age-acquired wisdom, no matter where I am.

Sure do wish I could turn back the clock!

AFFIRMATION: I remember my life’s purpose: to be the Light everywhere
