The Entitlement (Anti-Prosperity) Path

Updated: Feb 4

Linda became a writer at 38 when Ken passed from cancer at 41. The two of them were the "dynamic duo" of real estate before Ken died, earning a good living for many years.

After Ken died, and because of her grief, Linda was unable to cope and became delusional. All of the wealth they had accumulated, the boat, the cars, and the big house on the water slowly dissipated. Linda lost it all and was living like a bag lady on the street for about two years when her brother finally sought legal custody of her and helped her get funding to live in a group home, then independent living, and then finally into mainstream housing (condo) where over time and through state-funded counseling, Linda's delusional behavior adjusted slightly but not fully back to reality. Linda continued counseling.  Family support eventually helped Linda stabilize when she was around 62 years old. She was then released from her brother's oversight/guardianship as she was able to take care of her own affairs.

By the time she was 65, Linda was collecting about $1400 a month from Ken's social security, living in a condo where her rent and utilities were $700 a month. With no car, insurance or any other housing costs. Linda had managed to amass a pile of cash she kept in her freezer ($20k to be exact.) It was in her freezer because she was receiving Medicaid, a state-financed health care program and was not allowed to have more than $2,000 in assets.

The attorney her brother hired to become Linda's guardian had now become her confidant. He encouraged Linda to "stash the cash" so she would continue to receive Medicaid. When Linda turned 65, she was now eligible to receive cost free Medicare.  Adding Medicaid, Linda had virtually no health insurance expenses.

Linda was afraid to get a car, take a trip or even put her money in the bank. When questioned why she doesn't just pay for her health care, she stated, "Oh no! I have the best insurance, and it's free. They pay for my rides to doctor's offices, and I get $80 a month for toothpaste, new toothbrushes, etc."

Linda, a one-time successful businesswoman, imprisoned herself and her mind over "free toothpaste" and chauffer-serviced doctor visits. Her attorney encouraged her to buy her funeral plot and prepay her funeral costs in cash to spend some of her hidden money all along, knowing by law her assets exceeded the qualifying amount to receive Medicaid. She got on the "entitlement" train.

One of the major rules to experience prosperity is that one must not dam up the flow of money. Like any form of energy, money must flow in and flow out. When you "take," you must also give or else the flow will ultimately cease. In Linda's case, her flow resides in the cold, icy freezer. Linda is constantly focused on hiding her freezer wealth from "authorities." Imprisoned by her own "need for free."

Conscious change is necessary to help move one’s conscious mind away from entitlement. Entitlement is not just about receiving government assistance! Entitlement, which means taking because you can, comes in many forms. College students whose parents pay for everything while they are in school often graduate with a sense of entitlement. It comes as a real shock to many graduates that they must trade 8 hours a day, five days a week, for a paycheck on Friday.  An entitlement mindset will never bring true prosperity because prosperity is really only an exchange --  a give-and-take. All take and no give = entitlement. All give and no take = codependence. But that's the subject of another blog.

Lacking a prosperous existence?  What’s in your mindset?  Are you paying your own way?  Happy to ride on the coattails of others?  The simplest yet hardest to take action rule of prosperity is… one receives as one gives.  Where have you stopped the flow?  It’s not ever too late to have the machine of prosperity spit out its blessings.  It’s up to us to turn the crank.

Do It!

Affirmation:  I receive as I give.
