Self-Forgiveness (Originally Published 7/21/2022)

I recently had a long-term friend get scammed out of $34,000. Smart, retired, and proud, my friend - we will call him Bob but that’s not really his name - had a mutual friend ask me to pray for him. At first, I considered his secondhand request but was unsure what intention he had molded for himself that he wanted prayer support for.
After some thoughtfulness on my part, it appeared for me to that Bob would probably do best if he could be led to see the big picture of what just occurred and then begin the process to forgive himself and the scammer. One could list a long line of things in Bob’s scamming scenario that may require self-forgiveness: stupidity, trusting the wrong people, believing a liar, not mentioning to his wife that he was going to withdraw $34,000 out of their bank account and again, stupidity.
Every role in a relationship the human being experiences has in one way, shape or form, the prospect of spiritual maturity; the rising above the physical aspect of the event with an eye to morph into a path of spiritual or divine opportunities the event provides. Besides giving a non-deductible donation to a stranger it doth appear to me that Bob’s bottom line, light filled lesson to learn is most wholly about forgiveness. In Bob’s case, self-forgiveness.
One of my favorite spirit “guidance” manuals, A Course in Miracles states that “the act of forgiveness cleans the memory of all dead thoughts so that remembrance of the truth of your existence can rise from the threshold of your Soul mind.”
Right now, Bob is experiencing the grief or loss of
· Self-esteem
· Wife’s respect
· A large sum of cash
· No respect of friends
· Peace
· Happiness
While in grief over loss, it is customary to experience anger and depression as well as other various and rather sudden feelings that can separate one from a reasonably happy life. There is really only one activity that can “clean” the mind and heart from the shadow energies of anger and depression that grip like the talons of an eagle and don’t let go; one exercise of the spirit that when mastered can be the go-to emotion and action when in the midst of experiences that leave one in the minus column of life … forgiveness. The Course says that “all the complexities of the world has spun fragile cobwebs that disappear through acts of forgiveness.”
In Bob’s case, I am “prayer supporting” him that he may find a way to forgive himself. I happen to know the best way to forgive oneself is to start by forgiving those who you have been holding unforgiveness for. You know, the ex-spouse, an old boss, or coworker, a rotten neighbor, parents, relatives ‑-- well the list can be longer than one can imagine. Bob has just paid $34,000 for the opportunity to FINALLY develop and permanently install forgiveness on his mental and emotional mind-bodies.
Developing the forgiveness “habit” is a result of making a conscious change. Calling upon other “free for the asking” helpers such as faith, strength, courage, and release can also be helpful to developing a forgiveness attitude.
I pray that Bob’s road is short and that he will come to understand that he is a spirit being having a human experience and as such, the mission is for him to develop qualities that bring light, not shadow, energy to the planet. Forgiveness (especially of self the Course says) “is the world’s equivalent of heaven’s justice”.
Rats! Looks like I’m going to have to up my own forgiveness quotient after writing this. Thanks Bob!
