Potential Calling (Originally Published 3/22/2023)

I sold commercial real estate for years. Most commercial sales ultimately require an appraisal before banks will give the new purchaser a loan. Part of what the commercial property appraiser must determine is the “highest and best use” of the property; its potential and then add that aspect of the appraisal to the overall final value of the property. The bank will use the appraisal to decide what “potential” the building has if they have to take the building back someday in foreclosure.

Everyone is always abuzz about the purpose of life, the true meaning of existence. Why was I born white and not Chinese? Why were my parents born into slums where I still reside? Why was my child born with birth defects? While researching something for a blog idea, I came across a statement that blew trumpets in my head: (in a nutshell). . . each and every one of us is here to discover his or her own potentiality and then express it.

In the business of energy, potential energy is the “force” stored in objects waiting to express. Vegetables like beans contain potential energy. When eaten, digestive activity turns the chemicals housed by the bean into energy the body uses to thrive. Uneaten, the bean left rotting in the field, provides potential energy to fertilize the ground with healthy bacteria.

Surely the human bean --- er, I mean being who is so far advanced over the garden bean, contains potential of both the material and spiritual kind and most likely, that potential is beyond anything the human brain can comprehend. What is one’s highest and best use?

Too deep today? OK! Let’s simplify. Every spirit-being-having-a-human-experience has potential.  Unless you are Mahatma Gandhi or Jonas Salk, most likely has not yet been expressed or manifested. Do all of us have the potential to lead a country out of colonialism or invent a vaccine that ultimately saves millions of lives? Probably not. However, one may discover one’s own potential by standing up to a school board and leading children out of educational bondage or instead of inventing a vaccine, pick a pet project like recycling or human trafficking and work to vaccinate the mind against ignorance about the planet and the body.

But wait! Not everyone has type A, high testosterone abilities. Quiet leaders such as Rosa Parks and Walt Disney have fulfilled their potential as well.

To discover the potential that is bubbling in your mental/emotional cauldron, one must stop and take inventory. For example, who is/are your heroes? Heroines? One of mine is Maya Angelou. An African-American author and poet whose works touch my heart. Another heroine, Condoleezza Rice, was an American diplomat and political scientist who, at one time, was the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. and was actually in line of succession to become president.

Looking to discover and release my own potential many years back, I learned that my heroes and heroines (Jesus, the master teacher was also one of my heroes) represented aspects of MY potential. Don’t wait as long as I did to discover your potential. I was 55 years old when I started writing books. My defense. . . just wasn’t ready. My heroes showed me that through any adversity, my potential can be honed and expressed.

As Rumi, the 13th-century philosopher, so aptly states: Find a master to give instruction for your potential. They may not all be pleasant masters. My late husband was constantly criticizing my writing. For me, his criticisms became my fuel. Don’t be attached to the outcome of your potential. Look at the civil rights movement almost sixty years after Martin Luther King’s assassination. Results take time.

Lastly, don’t use your potential only for material gain. Doing anything just for financial gain will never allow your potential to materialize fully.

I’ve led you beside still waters – it’s up to you to take a drink.

AFFIRMATION: My potential is revealed to me now.

P.S. Please remember most of us carry potential to support others rather than be the mentor or leader. Without my husband’s support and the support of an amazing publishing team, these blogs and published books would not exist. Without support, the heart surgeon would never be able to operate. Just sayin’.
