PASSION

The Hindu Book of Wisdom, the Bhagavad Gita, says that in any action taken by a human being, the motivation behind the action comes from one of three places:

Goodness
Ignorance
Passion

Passion in and of itself is highly misunderstood. The dictionary defines passion as an intense, overpowering emotion or a compelling enthusiasm for something; passion may be thought of as the bridge between ignorance and goodness.

Passion of the material realm encompasses physical passion; that drive to be engaged with someone else physically. Emotional passion is the internal driver of joy as well as sadness and every feeling in between. Mental passion is the driver to learn, have an adventure, teach what you know, etc. Love is a human passion.

But passion also has a spiritual side to it. It is spiritual passion that urges that longing for a relationship with something greater than ourselves…a journey beyond the human condition. Spiritual passion is experienced by some as a compelling enthusiasm or overpowering emotion, but spiritual passion is not really recognized by most in a truthful light.

As spirit-beings-having-a-human experience, like goodness and ignorance, passion of the human kind is designed as a foundation for understanding spirit passion. Selflessness, generosity, kindness, compassion, and service to others are all examples of spirit passion. Greed, hate, anger, fear, etc. are examples of ignorance. Goodness is the result of a deeper understanding that there’s always enough, all is well, and God’s got this.

Passion, the compelling enthusiasm for something, is perfectly okay to live a life with, but being driven by goodness is the preferred modus operandi for the spirit-being-having-a-human experience. As a spirit-being, we walk Earth charged with taking the high road in everything we think, do and say.

Ignorance. Goodness or passion. You decide.
