Olympic Truce

The Olympics began over 3,000 years ago. Originating in Greece, the original Olympic games, considered a sporting festival, were held in honor of Zeus, the god of sky and thunder. Although the ancient games were discontinued for a while, the first modern Olympics took place in 1896, again in Greece. Twelve nations participated, with 43 events and 280 athletes. Instead of gold medals, live wreaths and crowns were awarded to the victors.

Called the Olympics because the ancient games were held at a sacred site in the city of Olympia, today’s Summer Olympic games in Paris will host over 206 different nations, 10,500 athletes and 329 different medal events in 325 sports. Although revived in 1892 by a French baron as a way to promote physical well-being, the bigger picture is the coming together of different cultures, races and ideologies in the friendly spirit of cooperation and competition.

The ancient Olympics quickly became a political tool used by governing forces to assert dominance over rivals. Priests would offer sacrifices to gods for victories and religious celebrations. Since 1892, Olympic events have been held every four years except 1916 (WWI), 1940 (WWII) and 2020 (Covid). Now, the Olympics occur every two years, alternating between winter and summer sports.  

The Olympic Truce, originating from the ancient Greek Olympics, is an agreement of peace that all participating countries agree to. The Truce starts seven days before the start of the games and ends seven days after the Paralympics ends July 19, 2024, to September 15, 2024. The Olympic Truce was originated to ensure safe passage for all athletes to and from the games. The Olympic Truce hasn’t stopped terrorist attacks; however, In 1972 (Munich), eleven Israeli athletes/coaches were killed by terrorists. In the 1996 (Atlanta) games, a terrorist bomb killed one and injured more than 100 people.

Today’s Olympics still hold a political grip as Russian athletes cannot participate under their flag due to Russia’s Ukraine invasion, a violation of Olympic Committee ethics.

To me, the Olympics represent the hope of global unity between all people. Global unity is one of the potentials that the age of Aquarius, a 2,000-year astrological event, promises. The media will feature many human element stories of athletic successes and hardships, new friendships made between athletes whose countries are at odds and heroic tales of how the un-winners provided amazing grit and fortitude. Won’t you join me during the 60-day period of the Olympic Truce and take 30 seconds each day to visualize a planet of peace, not war, love, not hate, truth, not untruth. And while you’re at it, be sure everything YOU think, do and say embodies those light-filled visions as well.

Oh yes, one CAN contribute to world peace, love and truth, one thought and one action at a time.
