How to for Internal Change

It’s easy for spiritual leaders/teachers to stand before a crowd or write a blog and ask listeners/readers to “be in the light” or “release” anger, resentment, hatred, greed, jealousy etc. but the “how to” of moving into the light or the release of shadow emotions is not usually explained.  I recently had an experience where I used my own “preaching” on myself.  Thought I would share it.

Every year on our journey south to our winter haven, we stop to see an elderly couple whom we have adored for over 15 years.  Almost ninety, both Don and Joanne are amazing, loving, giving people.  At their ages, most of their time is spent in doctor’s offices.  About three years ago they bought into a lovely Florida community of other “senior” folks.  However, as they tell us, nothing is like spending quality time with quality friends like us.

We dedicate two full days of visiting with them where we play double pinochle nonstop only coming up for food and drink.  It’s always the boys against the girls and bragging rights of victory is deeply desired.  The first day the boys won.  The second day the girls won, moving us toward a rubber game attempting to captivate valuable bragging rights before our departure.  The third game (we play to 500) was neck and neck, each team hosting scores in the low 320’s.  Double Pinochle is a team sport.  I was dealt a dream hand that would have so many points available that the girls would have surely secured a future victory.

I made a wild bid to be able to name trump, grain control only to be challenged with a higher bid from one of the boys.  In playing pinochle, one needs their partner for support.  Joanne could not provide needed support as I learned from her passing on bidding, so I had to defer to the higher bid of the boys.  We all proceeded to lay out our meld, count our points and Joanne remarks . . . “Oh my, I see I have double kings” Double kings are worth 80 points.  I really only needed 20 points to have continued to capture the bid.  Sheesh!  Grrrr!  Rats!  S?it!

Instantly I started seething inside.  Greed had quickly rooted in my mind and to make matters worse, I mixed that greed with a touch of anger.  I could feel my blood pressure increase.  My type A personality was in full gear.  Sweaty palms indicated I was out of center.  Why couldn’t Joanne pay attention?  I hate losing to the boys because of inept playing.

Ever been here?  Oh, it might not have been a card game.  What about someone else getting the promotion you thought should be yours?  How about someone winning big in the lottery?  My favorite: someone more beautiful, thinner, richer?  Thankfully I knew right away that I was harboring thoughts and feelings taking me down a dark rabbit hole of no return.  How could I have such condemning feelings towards a wonderful elderly woman whose clarity was diminished with age?  Won’t I be there someday?  Was winning really everything?  How childish and shadow like was I?

Instantly a warm fuzzy feeling came over me as I repeated in my head several times 1) God’s Will not mine, 2) This is just a game and 3) I choose only feelings of light and love now.  Bingo!  The boys won that hand, and I was happy for them.  I even congratulated them on their great playing.

Then the unbelievable happened!  I was dealt an awesome hand.  A typical meld is between 40-50.  Mine was 115.  It didn’t even matter whether I won or lost.  Freedom from the deep seated “drive to win” felt great.  We ultimately won.  This is how the Universe works.  Turn inward when the darkness hits, make amends for the fault and be happy for the winner.

Sweet success comes in the material realm to those who are always striving to be the light in every situation; to be free of thoughts and feelings that separate one from their bounty like greed, jealousy, fear, anger, power over others, hatred, revenge.  My internal response to my dark thoughts and feelings was instant but I have been practicing this internal exploration and improvement of the internal self for what seems like many lifetimes.

Next time the internal “red alert nasty thought alarm” goes off, when the grips of the material realm (this is usually daily) rear their ugly heads, stop, and replace the darkness with a light filled affirmation or two.
