Hormonal Veils

Think falling in love was a conscious decision? Ha! Falling in love is hormonal. The star: oxytocin (not the drug oxycodone). Oxytocin is a neuropeptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus, shipped to the pituitary gland for storage, which then releases it into the bloodstream after the brain authorizes its release.

While oxytocin plays an important role in human reproduction, childbirth and a mother’s milk “let down”, oxytocin is also considered a bonding hormone related to social connections. Scientists have revealed that couples in the courting stage have much higher levels of oxytocin than those not in a courting relationship.

In other words, the hormone oxytocin is just another way some power greater than ourselves has seen fit to create love – a partnership with someone perfectly designed to help evolve us. The release of oxytocin into one’s bloodstream is said to enhance trust, empathy, fidelity and bonding cues.

But oxytocin is not the only relationship enhancement hormone. Dopamine and serotonin are supporting actors for oxytocin. Since all of these “happy hormones” are designed to decrease anxiety, its no wonder that one feels love when they kick in.

Love is a good thing. Oxytocin surges are a good thing. Pray for oxytocin surges but be careful who you are around when it surfaces.
