Herd Immunity and Mentality (Originally Published 4/19/2022)

It seems as though a “herd immunity” is looming upon us as a result of Covid 19 whether the planet becomes collectively Vaxxed or not. I’ve lost count of the people I know who have had an affair with one variant or another of the pandemical virus who have been double and triple Vaxxed. The planet, in its own empirical and majestical way, is seeing to the furtherance of the species, something Mother Earth does so well. Historically, the coronavirus that manifested as covid-19 will have come to eventually burn itself out just like every other plague-like pandemic known throughout history.

The Justinian Plague of 541-544, originating in Ethiopia, is the first known plague of recorded history. Wikipedia lists 17 other major plagues since then NOT including diseases like smallpox, measles, mumps, tuberculosis, etc., that were brought by Europeans to the western hemisphere that carried suspected death tolls in line with the definition of a pandemic.

Covid is not Earth’s first rodeo with disease. Earth is a planet of self-healing and that is becoming more evident as we witness herd immunity creep across the world. In another year or so, Covid and its surviving variants will be but a twinkle in the mind’s eye. But the remnants of the herd “mentality” that Covid left behind might take centuries to “right” itself.

Consider the following. By definition, herd is defined as a large group of animals of the same species who share the same characteristics. More to the point, a large group of people who choose an ideology or way of life collectively. Human herds ascribe to certain ideals which in turn creates the “herd mentality” or the “commandments” the herd agrees to live by. A certain human herd in 2016 agreed to work towards a herd mentality to Make America Great Again. A certain human herd in 1939 Germany agreed to Aryan Race Theory leading to the annihilation of six million Jews.

Animals herd typically as a matter of survival; to forage for food, stay safer from predators and to form mating possibilities. Herd forming is an instinct, that is, an action that is innate, natural, and inherent. Interestingly, although by definition a herd is basically unstructured, some type of “control” animal is typically imitated or emulated by the bulk of the herd which acts as a sort of herd “glue”.

In the animal kingdom there are many animal herds: cattle, bees, elephants, geese, penguins and monkeys, the list can go on and on. There are also plenty of other living species that are not herd minded: leopards, frogs, sea turtles, giant and red pandas, moles, skunks and tigers, to name a few. To herd or not to herd is NOT the question. Humans herd. Period. The question is, what herd mentality(s) are you a member of?

Fear, a great herd driver, is also innate, natural, and inherent. Unlike any other being on Earth, the human being is additionally imbued with the power to make choices. Viruses are not living entities with the power of choice. Fear is one choice – faith or love would be the counterpart to fear. Fear can actually be, and actually is in many cases the “control animal” that hosts or leads a herd mentality. A dark emotion such as fear acting as a heard host? How is that possible?

A herd of angry buffalo can devastate a small village. A herd of penguins can annihilate one’s sense of smell. A herd of humans with fear as the basis for everything they do will eventually topple all that is good.

What herd mentality are you choosing to join?

AFFIRMATION: I am aware of the choices I make and the herds I join.
