Often times in my leisure activities (walking, biking, gardening) I receive a message that moves through my mind like a rolling snowball seeking to make itself greater. One such bulletin did just that recently: Just maybe the Civil War never really ended. The thought that we are still in the Civil War prompted an exciting research project into the foundation of the Civil War where I uncovered amazing coincidences that relate to today’s civil unrest.
Many historians now tell us that the real start of the Civil War began the day Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. Within 12 months, 11 southern states left the United States (SC, MS, AL, GA, LA, TX, VA, AR, NC, and TN) created the Confederate Union. Jefferson Davis was elected as their President in 1861. Abraham Lincoln’s refusal to accept this succession was the spark of the Civil War.
At issue for the 11 succeeded states was Lincoln’s stance on slavery, taxes, the federal government’s control of the west’s expansion, infrastructure improvements and trade between the states. War ensued which included the loss of over 620,000 lives - more in total than all of America’s other wars to date. Property destruction was magnanimous and many families became divided over these issues.
The physical battles of the Civil War ended with the last shot bring fired in June, 1865. I would suggest that our country has not fully healed over the huge devastation even yet.
Following the Civil War was the Reconstruction Era. It formally lasted years. Soldiers from the north were engaged in rebuilding what was physically lost and ensuring that the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln’s vision for the freedom of all signed in 1863, was adhered to.
Here we are, 155 years after the Civil War purportedly ended and the civil unrest of the present is uncannily similar.
Hate, anger and untruth has all been accepted as normal since a certain mindset does not like the current President. A issue today is states rights vs. federal rules (abortion is an example of this as were the handling of Covid issues lockdown to name a few). The border wall in Mexico is federal infrastructure improvement. Taxes of course are always an issue. Slavery today is replaced with illegal immigrant rights. Trade issues now are a global national issue.
AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT SEES THIS? Do we still have to suffer through the unnecessary loss of life and the horrible destruction of federal/local property? Destruction of Fort Sumter, a federal building was the first step in the blood shed of the Civil War when the confederates attacked it and burned it to the ground.
Even at issue today is the 13th 14th plus 15th amendments that were enacted several years after 1865. Collectively they abolished slavery, granted black men the right to vote and insured that all legal citizens of the United States receive equal protection under the law.
Maybe it’s too late, the script is rolling and there’s nothing we can do. We can however be honest with ourselves. The Reconstruction period of the Civil War is NOT over. We all have a chance of being part of the phoenix that CAN arise from the ashes still lingering 155 years later. Stretch your comfort zone and see your role in the repairing of our great nation. We can’t change the minds of others but working on ourselves to be fair minded (like Lincoln) and firm on what is right for the collective can go a long way towards the healing need for our country that’s been brewing since 1865.
The below affirmation is a “collective” affirmation designed to collectively heal the civil strife of our times. Send this blog to those you think will be willing to focus on the affirmation. Jesus, the greatest prophet ever to walk on Earth told us that “whenever two or more are gathered “thy will be done”. Join together. Affirm our country be united in love and be a part of the healing process.
Affirmation: As I heal myself from political anxiety and bitterness, my country is united in Love.
