The Circadian Clock

The world runs on spectral rhythms. A spectral rhythm is like a sound wave, there is a specific beat and time for each rhythm.  Poetry, music, and even time all run on spectral rhythms. In a way, one could say that the human condition is prisoner to spectral rhythms. Who is overseeing all rhythms that the spirit-being-having-a-human-experience regularly faces?

The circadian clock is an internal, invisible body system that runs 24/7, regulating processes in the body that occur regularly, such as sleep/wake cycles. The circadian clock is synchronized by light and darkness. Think of the circadian clock as an invisible operating system defined as the body’s master clock. Technically, it is neurons of the brain’s hypothalamus, combining with the suprachiasmatic nucleus, also in the hypothalamus, that attempt to coordinate the many “do this now” clocks or drivers of the body.

One might wonder, how does a gland the size of the hypothalamus (the size of an almond!) have so much power and control over the body? Wonder away! It is what it is. However, since the mighty circadian clock controls body temperature, digestion, and hormone existence, to name a few, let's reveal what helps AND hurts one’s circadian rhythms.

The 24-hour cycle of one’s circadian clock is highly affected by one’s external environment, which includes work and play habits. Known as Circadian Rhythm Disruption, jet lag, working nights (shift work), irregular sleep habits, exposure to artificial blue light at night, caffeine consumption before bedtime, inconsistent eating times, as well as aging, can all contribute to “internal clock” Circadian Rhythm Dysfunction.

Except for the aging thing, avoiding other activities that disrupt one’s circadian rhythm might just be the first step toward better health. Good health results from the choices one makes to do the things the body needs to stay rhythmically viable.

Think lifestyle changes can’t make a difference? Think again. The hypothalamus may be small, but it is mighty and waiting for you to change some things so that it can better serve you. And that’s just the hypothalamus. A happy hypothalamus will trigger better digestion, a steady, consistent body temperature, improved hormone regulation, and, more importantly, good sleeping habits.

Change and heal! Of course…the choice is always yours.
