The Amazing Kidneys

Recently, a friend of mine contracted a deadly staph infection from fishing. He was misdiagnosed in a hospital emergency room. Four days later, he was air ambulanced to a different hospital after exhibiting very serious symptom indicators for staph. Brian was in the intensive care unit of that hospital for seventy-three days. We were sure he had bought the farm.

The human body has two kidneys. Located on either side of the spine behind the abdomen, below the rib cage. About fist-sized, the human kidneys are "kidney bean" shaped and average between 4-5 inches long. Wee (no pun intended) little organs that are solely responsible for filtering waste products from the blood. The waste products are then stored in the bladder and excreted as urine. Kidneys also regulate acid/alkaline, salt and potassium levels in the body, as well as produce hormones that regulate blood pressure. Kidneys even have a hand in the production of red blood cells. That’s the physical (mind-body) aspect. However, the kidneys are very high up on the food chain when it comes to the mental, emotional and spiritual mind-bodies as well!

As far as the mental mind-body is concerned, the kidneys house the body's willpower and short-term memory control. As movers of fluid, the vibratory frequency of the kidneys are huge contributor to one's self-understanding, one's emotional output, as well as messages promoting the perception of one's surroundings and the expression of gentleness. Besides physically filtering the blood, the kidneys are also said to "filter" how we relate to those closest to us and one's ability to "release" patterns and relationships that no longer serve one's life path.

The wisdom of Chinese medicine, a 3000-year-old tradition, believes that the root of the body’s energy is held in the kidneys. Try living without them. You can’t. In fact, healthy kidneys are so important to living a healthy life that God provided two of them…one extra as a backup.

When the kidneys are not functioning at their maximum, one may experience night sweats, ear ringing, vertigo, dry mouth and skin, and even a lower libido. Ears have a special relationship with the kidneys. Excessive feelings and expressions of anger, anxiety, paranoia and fear can cause the kidneys to lose their chi (energy), resulting in lesser kidney function and, ultimately, failure as one reaches old age.

As for Brian, his kidneys had shut down from the misdiagnosed staff infection and told he had a 50-50 chance of them “coming back” to life. Thankfully, the kidneys did come back after six months of dialysis. Brian was fully restored within a year, thanks to his amazing kidneys. Did I mention Brian was 73 years old?
