Spiritual Accessories
The other day, I found myself sequestered in what my girlfriends call my "Barbie doll closet," getting ready for a date night with my husband. My closet is quite large and is filled with a nice (but aging) array of seasonal clothing to include shoes, hats, jewelry, scarves, belts, sweaters and jackets that I, in Barbie doll fashion, mix and match to produce hopefully attractive (and sometimes sexy) outfits. This is an oddity I can't explain except that I never had a Barbie doll growing up. Perhaps I was waiting to apply the Barbie doll gene to my adult life.
I began thinking, however, what is in my spiritual closet that I could use to adorn myself with? Spiritual accessories, you may ask? You know of them, but they may not be deeply ingrained in your psyche enough so that you can call upon them as I call upon a scarf or a belt in my Barbie closet.
All of us have at least one ‘fruit of the Spirit’ as a natural birthright. Thank God, because the idea that all fruits of the Spirit must be learned by trial and error – usually through relationships – can be daunting.
Fruits of the Spirit: forgiveness, compassion, thoughtfulness, consideration, generosity, truthfulness, patience, and respect, just to name a few. Today's assignment (stop moaning! Do you think it was an accident you found this blog today? HA!) is to first identify your "natural" fruit of the Spirit. Too egotistical a thought for you? Look around. What one fruit of the Spirit do you admire in someone else? Look no further. You have probably identified your natural fruit. Next, pick a fruit you would like to add to your spiritual produce bin. If you're really brave, pick the spirit fruit that evades you the most. Perhaps you are quick to anger – patience might be in order. Fear of loss or poverty? Live by the rule that what you give away, you get to keep. The development of generosity may be in order.
The good news is that there is no test. The bad news is if you don't continue to evolve on a spiritual level by a little addition of a new spiritual fruit here and there, well…
Pick the fruit and ask AI, how you can be more _____________ (fill in the blank). And then…DO IT!
