I was recently interviewing prospective team players for positions at the office. I found it rather difficult to do with masks on. Forced to look into one’s eyes only, I couldn’t keep my mind from wanting to complete the picture of the person across the table from me. Were they happy, sad, angry or joyful?
I can’t imagine what it must be like for young children of women who must keep their faces covered due to religious requirements to trust their mothers and feel safe. It’s only a nose and a mouth but they say so much in their naked silence.
Masks have clearly become barriers from more than just Covid-19. I do not like to be served in a restaurant by a person whose face is half covered. It doesn’t feel good to me to sit and enjoy a meal while someone is burdened by a mask. Not to mention that it’s impossible to process whatever gifts their spirit is blessing me with.
We have been programmed to believe that people normally wear masks to cover up what they might want to hide or to beacon out as someone else – like Halloween or someone who wants to rob a bank. Masks illicit distrust, period. Will our young children ever recover from all the trickle-down effects of a masked society? Will we find a vaccine for the angst that mask wearing causes both the wearer and the onlooker?
I can’t tell you I begin to understand all the reasons people are resisting masks – some don’t want to be told what to do, others can’t stand the restrictedness and others can’t tolerate things on their face. I can, however, tell you that on an unconscious level, being exposed to mask wearing people has had an extremely detrimental effect on the psyche. Masks just increase the level of separation between the human being at a time where separation from the human race is completely antithetical to what the world needs.
Let’s be conscious of this silent separator – the mask, and take extra steps to comfort and appreciate those who must wear a mask to serve you. We can’t let Covid-19 take our spirit as well as our health can we?
Affirmation: I take extra steps to connect with others who are wearing protective masks.
