I love this time of year. Spring always introduces a new set of totems to message me on my life path journey. Although I always have my three regular totems: Redwing Black Bird, Bees and Great Blue Heron, new totems come each spring and fall season to bring to light a new trait or quality about myself that needs expression or to provide a missing puzzle piece to a life puzzle I’m trying to resolve or simply to remind me of truths I already know but have forgotten. According to Ted Andrews, totem expert extraordinaire, animal totems are nature’s way (some call nature God) of connecting our spirit selves to our Soul self. Soul is always sending messages to “light up” my path. For me, the “light” comes through birds, animals, insects and yes, even reptiles!
For twelve years I had a recurring swan nest in my yard. I would regularly visit Swan as she sat selflessly waiting for her eggs to hatch. I would say to her over and over “Show me your babies”. After about year three she would stand up and show me her eggs and her cygnet hatchlings. I would express gratitude to her for sharing.
As the cygnets (baby swans) began to swim, mom would allow her babies to eat bread right out of my hand. If you’ve ever been around a brooding Swan you will understand how amazing this is. Unlike most other animals, cygnets remain with their parents until they are full grown adults, perhaps because cygnets by nature are extremely vulnerable and impressionable. Swan parents don’t want any imprinting on their children except from them. (Gee, that sounds familiar) At any rate, Swan parents are fearlessly protective and will aggressively attack any source or threat they perceive with great aplomb!
From my many years with Swans (they vacated their land lease when a fox appeared, fox find Swan eggs a delicious delicacy) I developed a deeper sensitivity and gained a renewed respect for the passion and power that lied latent in me to write about mystic concepts. Swan’s long neck represents the path from the material to the mystical. Definitely one of my archetypal qualities.
Three new totems have made a direct hit in my yard this spring. Muskrat, Rabbit and Hawk. The first new animal to present its totem energy to me was the Muskrat, hardly a glamorous totem. A lot like the Beaver, the Muskrat, is known for its tenacity, a reminder to me to keep on keeping on as I journey through the world of writers; I’m at the end of a six year journey on the publishing of five books about crystals. Because the Muskrat almost always lives near water I am also reminded by her presence (two baby Muskrats have also appeared) to go deep into my emotional mind-body without drowning in the past. Muskrat is a fabulous reminder to continue with the release of resentment (Lenten log links) that I gave up during the past Lenten season.
Hawk was the next totem that appeared in my yard to catch my attention. A most magnificent Hawk. Hawk appeared three weeks straight through April. Totem messages are best understood by understanding a totem’s habitat archetypes and even folklore about them. Hawk is recognized in myths for its strong wings, amazing eyesight and ferociousness. Hawk was the Greek God Apollo’s messenger.
There are many varieties of Hawks with habitats that include marshes, grasslands, mountains and woodlands. My Hawk is a Northern Harrier Marsh Hawk which again signals me to go deep within my emotional storage chest to heal the past and retrieve the creative freedom that hurtful emotional experiences block. Because Hawk has amazing eyesight I feel like Hawk is asking me to take a step back and get the bigger picture of what I’m immersed in at the moment. Is it really about publishing the books or just about the journey?
Hawk has made many appearances to me over the years. I seem to regularly notice Hawks as they perch on trees along the expressway but now one has decided to deliver a specific message. I am open to receive Hawk’s message is my mantra. Perhaps I’ll have more to report on Hawk’s presence in the future.
Interestingly, Muskrat is considered a tasty delicacy to Hawks. I’m always amazed how nature provides.
Lastly Rabbit has appeared. Many Rabbits actually. The fact that there are so many Rabbits is a little odd since Rabbit provides a tasty meal to a hungry Hawk as well.
Rabbits have come and gone in my yard for years. Because of a Rabbit’s fecundity, I always hear the message of prosperity from the presence of Rabbit. Especially loud and clear to me considering Hawk’s reminder to keep an eye on the big picture.
I am also reminded by my Rabbit totem that my prosperity is in God’s hands and that worry about the subject is not only a waste of time but a waste of emotional energy. Chinese astrology has Rabbit representing one of its twelve signs. Being born in the year of the
Rabbit is considered to be fortunate. Rabbit’s presence often reminds me how fragile prosperity can really be. Next year I might not see any Rabbits, but Squirrels will be abundant instead. Squirrel is a reminder to be cautious with one’s wealth in preparation for a future season. (Squirrel away...)
Rabbit, Muskrat and Hawk — oh my. Find one of your totems. Study that bird, animal, insect or reptile’s habits, where they live, etc. Soul Messages await those who pay attention to their animal surroundings.
Affirmation: I hear loud and clear my animal totem’s message.
