Obsidian

Updated: Feb 4

Obsidian is an extrusive igneous (volcanic) rock, rich in elements that form when the molten magma of an erupting volcano meets the Earth’s surface and cools instantly. Generally speaking, extrusive rocks form a crystal structure above ground in which other elements/minerals have a chance, over time, to form small crystals. Rapidly cooling magma on the Earth’s surface is not able to form a crystal structure, unlike lava which cools slowly.

Crystal structures, or systems as some refer to them, are one of six key ingredients that a crystal is imbued with that give a crystal its unique archetype. A crystal structure is the description of the ordered arrangement of atoms, ions or molecules in a crystalline material. Obsidian does NOT have a crystalline structure and is considered an amorphous (without structure) crystal. In other words, an amorphous crystal is one where atoms have no periodic structure whatsoever. Plastic, glass and wax are all examples of an amorphous solids.

Obsidian is imbued with all five Earth elements (air, fire, earth, water and metal) as a result of its rapid cooling creation process. As such, obsidian forms in many colors, although black obsidian is the most common. Common obsidian mineral inclusions can include magnetite, iron oxide, potassium oxide, lime, sodium and magnesium. Obsidian’s composition is composed of around 70% silica and 15% aluminum.

As a true glass, obsidian was highly valued by Native Americans for arrowheads and spear points. As early as 300 AD, the Teotihuacan people of Mexico derived great wealth and power from exporting obsidian to surrounding cultures.

Amorphous crystals, even without a crystal structure, carry the potential to eventually crystalize with the application of heat or pressure. Many crystals are amorphous in the beginning of their creation process. Then, the energy of minerals joins an amorphous crystal and new potential is born. That’s why, metaphysically, obsidian’s amorphous energetic archetypes of potential can be channeled, with intention, to achieve new ideas and manifestations. Here are some archetypes for various obsidians:

Black obsidian – prophecy stone, grounding, clarity

Green obsidian – prosperity, harmonize all chakras

Mahogany obsidian – reclaim personal power, toxin removal

Red obsidian – vitality, treat fevers and chills

Snowflake obsidian – balance, past life recall

Yellow obsidian – scrying, relationship grounding

Golden sheen obsidian – protection, purifies aura, overcome abuse
