Ingredients (Originally Published 11/7/2022)

Craving a sea bass dinner, I searched the web for a recipe to prepare the sea bass I recently purchased. The easiest recipe called for Herbs de Provence’, an all-purpose seasoning that originated in the Provence region of France. I have two giant shelves in my kitchen cupboards dedicated just to spices: ingredients necessary for the production of a delicious meal. I was amazed to find Herbs de Provence’ in the back corner of the second shelf. Viola! The sea bass was fabulous.

I love to play dress-up. One of my friends actually calls me “New Age” Barbie. Putting together fun outfits to wear requires ingredients from tops to skirts/pants, scarves, jewelry, hats and more. Most of my closet ingredients have been accumulated over the years. I feel confident that I could smartly dress for absolutely any occasion, top to bottom, with a fifteen-minute notice.

I have managed to save a small nest egg of money to handle an unexpected problem or investment opportunity that may come my way. I’ve been caught with zero ingredients in the bank, and it was a very unpleasant, albeit a learning experience.

Ingredients are defined as any of the parts in a mixture. Kitchen, closet and bank ingredients are one thing. What about the ingredients that dwell in the mind? You know those thoughts about people, politics and life that we all unconsciously call upon that create all of the moments we experience?

The ingredients of my mind came together yesterday, and I found myself harshly judging everything I saw and heard. You know, that person is ugly…look how horrible that person keeps their yard…how stupid and idiotic is THAT idea? Well, you get the picture. Where did all of those unkind, uncompassionate, self-centered thoughts come from?

The human psyche, just like a kitchen cupboard, closet or bank account, is ALWAYS gathering and storing ingredients of the human kind. Gossip, media hype and even television programs all provide “ingredients” the mind can (and will) take on and use to produce thoughts and feelings in the mental and emotional closets (mind-bodies). This is simply the human condition. The question is, what are you doing with the mind ingredients you have gathered?

Remembering first that we are a spirit-being having a human experience, one may wish to take an inventory of the ingredients that are stored in and dwell in the emotional and mental mind-bodies. Thinking about the qualities of others we don’t like is called judging. Judging is a huge time waster. Resenting someone for a hurt they delivered to us, whether yesterday or ten years ago, is an emotional ingredient that needs removal and replacement.

Yes, ingredients in the spice cupboard, the clothes closet and the bank are necessary when the need to cook, dress and invest arises. However what ingredients are your heart and/or mind holding onto that needs to be eradicated? Hatred? Jealousy? Greed? Resentment? Anger? Any shadow ingredient of the mind and heart leads to ill health and a less than stellar existence.

Hmmmm…I think I have some cleaning to do!
