Honor’s Hidden Message

It all started when I wrote an ad for my Ten Commandments learning product. I discussed my experience with the Fourth Commandment, which clearly states: 'Thou shalt honor thy father and mother.' When I wrote the word honor in the piece, my whole body vibrated momentarily. Two hours later, I realized I needed to better define honor. So my honor deep dive began.
Before I get there, however, please ponder my familial history. My parents were physically abusive as I grew up. Seriously abused. “I’ll be damned if I would waste one tiny minute to honor them!” This is the time to scroll or delete if this scenario describes an issue that you are not ready to face. That or…hold on, change is coming!
Honor’s dictionary definitions are two-fold. The first is a mental health decision to hold someone or something in high respect or esteem. The second definition I found states that honor is a moral choice: adherence to a standard of conduct or what is right.
Seriously?! I'm expected to honor – that is, to respect my abusive parents because it is right? What about the obligation my parents had to love and protect me? Then it hits me: I'm not responsible for their inequities, only for my own. Was I provided with this set of parents to embark on my lifelong journey of discovering honor? To learn to honor even the dishonorable? Wait! Who am I to judge anyone as dishonorable? After all, I am here because of the product of her egg and his sperm. On some level, I am ultimately part of the big plan.
I soon came to learn that to not honor my parents was to dishonor myself. In essence, the 4th commandment is really about honoring oneself. After all, can I truly hold anyone in high respect and esteem if I can't do the same for and about myself first? Want the three minutes you spent reading this to pay off?
Right now, look in the mirror and gaze deeply into the windows of your spirit – your eyes - and repeat the affirmation below. Do this for thirty days. The word honor will manifest like fireworks for the rest of your life. And it is good!
AFFIRMATION: I honor myself as an individualized expression of light and love.
