He Who is First, Shall Be. . .

…Last. I just read a poem by Rumi, a 13th century philosopher, called The Last Goat, that finally explained this very popular Biblical verse (Matthew 20:16). So often when we seem to end up last at the “back of the herd” whether in a race, some sort of accomplishment like school or in the attainment of material or spirit-based success, there is a tendency to feel like a failure or in my terms. . . a cheap suitcase.

     Here's Rumi’s philosophic, poetic, 13th century message:

                                The Lame Goat

You’ve seen a herd of goats

                                going down to the water.

                                The lame and dreamy goat

                                brings up the rear.

                                There are worried faces about

that one, but now they are

                                laughing.

                                Because look, as they return,

                                that goat is leading.

                                There are many different kinds

                                of knowing.  The lame goat’s

kind is a branch that traces

back to the roots of presence.

Learn from the lame goat and

                                lead the herd home.

Is the message not to judge the slow or lame? Or perhaps it’s not to always run to the front (one of my flaws, by the way) of the line. How about seeing the light in all Spirits as they belie their brokenness (lame) or leadership archetypes for the good of all.

I guess in the end it doesn’t really matter if one is first or last. What matters is that one stay in their own lane (skin), love themselves exactly where they are and not judge anyone else’s speed or lane.

You were guided to read this today. Let the message settle into and become a permanent message your conscious mind that. . . at this moment, everything is exactly as it should be.

Goose bumps, anyone?
