Greedy Gardens

Updated: 4 days ago

Every now and then, greed rears its ugly head. No one is immune to the frequency of greed. Think of greed and generosity as emotions and experiences that exist at different ends of the same spectrum. The life of every human lives in spectral reality. How one applies spiritual acumen to an experience dictates the light-filled results one receives.

Most people get a visual of Simon Legree, the wicked landlord from Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (who, with both hands, finishes off his handlebar mustache as a nervous condition of greed). Greed, however, is a silent sleaze in everyone's consciousness, which means thoughts of greed can often be interspersed among the many thoughts a human has daily. So, what is greed? Really?

Let's start with the spiritual definition of greed, which merely says that greed is a fear that there will not be enough for self, a lack of faith in the power of affirmation and that God provides all things. Somewhere in the Bible, a verse says, if God provides for the least of the sparrows, why wouldn't his beloved children be provided for?

On a human level, greed is defined as an intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power or food. Who doesn't want wealth and power? Where is one's threshold for food sharing?

For the sake of argument, let's agree that each and every human walking the planet regularly hosts thoughts of greed. No, you say? Here are some regular human activities that mask greedy tendencies. Can you see yourself in any of them?

1)      Due to construction, rush in traffic to beat out other cars waiting to merge into fewer lanes. What? Do you think your time is more precious than those other people waiting in cars to merge on a first-come, first-served basis?

2)      Buying up the last thing on a store shelf, especially when you have three of the items in your hand at the store or on a shelf at home.

3)      Having a pocket full of money or change and snubbing the person asking for a handout who crosses your path.

4)      Hoarding the clicker. This greedy experience requires no definition.

5)      Play loud music outside of your house that the neighbors can clearly hear. Really? What makes one think I want my personal space filled with the music you love that I don't? Very selfish.

6)      Violating those commitments we made to our employers as to the time we agreed to spend in trade for a paycheck.

The list is never-ending. As a conscious change coach, it is my pleasure to help you reduce your greed quotient. Making and maintaining a commitment to being just 10% less greedy on your part by consciously converting to a new belief that you will always have enough can increase your wealth by at least 20%. Sounds like a fair investment to me.

Greed's polar opposite is the expression of generosity. Taking one well-disguised act of greed and polarizing it with generosity can become a permanent state of mind/activity to reduce greed (fear) down a notch or two.

Here are some actions you can take to neutralize greed and its many hangers-on like fear, self-centeredness, narcissism…well, you get the gist.

1)      Any charity that approaches you for a donation – give something. I started sending five-dollar bills to places like the Alzheimer's Association, the National Cancer Foundation, St. Joseph's Indian School, etc. One-dollar bills work as well. I remember  a wealthy woman telling me that she turned her financial life around by NOT denying anyone who asks for donations. I can also avow that I have been giving my five-dollar bills away for over twenty years. All my needs have been met.

2)      Give 10% of your income away. Church or charities will get you a hundred-fold return. I have an affinity for children's charities, so that's usually where my 10% goes. It's not selfish or greedy to give to a cause that has your heart. Doing so is merely heeding Soul guidance!

Self-centered, me, me, me thinking is the central frequency that fans greed's energetic expression. There are many ways to chip away at self-centered actions. The goal is to replace me, me, me thinking with "What are my strengths and blessings, and how can I provide them to others?" Scary thinking? You bet! Change your thinking and watch the Universe respond in kind.

Years ago, I dated a man who ALWAYS parked as far away from the door in a mall parking lot as possible. It was quite irritating to me. When questioned why, he responded, "I'm quite capable of walking the distance. I leave the close places for those less capable." I was always sure those who took those close parking places were just as capable of walking as we were. It took me 30 years to get the point of him doing that. Perhaps I can help you cut to the chase easier. My consciousness at the mall parking lot was greedy for MY time, MY comfort and MY convenience. My friend was working on taking the strength of his able-bodied-ness and sharing it with others. By now, I'm sure you are desperately looking at what you might be able to do to eradicate that little greedy vibe that may be lingering and causing a reduction of prosperity flow in your life. Here are some ideas, but first, an important rule.

If you go blabbering to anyone about how you park far away in a mall parking lot or about your donations, you have increased your greed quotient. Bragging is a minor form of green. The conscious change to greed relief is a solo journey.

1)      Give money away to anyone (except relatives) who asks, fully releasing it. Watch for the ten-fold return.

2)      Commit to regularly spending time with a friend or relative who needs help due to sickness, disability, or loneliness. It may look like cleaning for them or even grocery shopping. I've done this numerous times, and the feeling I get when done is indescribable. The return for you will be an increase in the time you need. Helping a charity with a project such as Habitat for Humanity or a food bank, even a Red Cross type of charity works just as well.

3)      Intentionally and with conviction, walk up to a stranger and give them a smile and a compliment. This is an excellent exercise if you are suffering from ego selfishness in general. Everyone is in need of human connection. It is greed for self-importance that stops us from connecting to other people.

Let me know how this is working for you!!!!!

AFFIRMATION: I now move to transform a greedy spirit into a generous spirit.
