Agate - The Protection Stone

Agates, a form of chalcedony (pronounced cal-sid-ny) quartz, forms when gas bubbles get trapped in lava that is cooling and solidifying. The bubbles in the Lava then becomes filled with silica and alkali-bearing water, which then coagulates into a gel-like substance. The alkali attacks the iron in the surrounding lava, and bands of the iron hydroxide (hydrogen/oxygen bond) are birthed in the gel. Over time the water evaporates, and its elements (hydrogen and oxygen atoms) crystallize, leaving the "banded" stones known as agates. That might explain why no two agate crystals are never alike.

Most agates are translucent (clear, transparent), meaning light can shine through them, unlike their cousins (jaspers), which are more opaque. Agates' core energy driver is protection. Agates are simply constructed of oxygen and silicate (silicone) molecules. Agates form the outer lining of most geodes because agate mostly forms around vacant spaces allowing the center to fill with pure quartz.

Quite simply, agates and jaspers are the same crystal, but because of how they form, one is denser and slower acting (Jasper) and agates are see-through. Agate's core energetic driver is protection. Its protection properties usually run in accordance with its color, although there are always exceptions to everything in the crystal realm. For example, a red fire agate, when chilled in the freezer, can bring a fever down when the agate is applied to the forehead. Here are a few keywords of protection from some common agates. For a successful crystal experience, an intention, preferably written down, should be part of the healing/growth process.

·         Blue lace agate (black, blue, white) – protects the throat, calming

·         Botswana agate (brown, white) – protection from evil

·         Crazy lace agate (green, black, yellow) – protects emotions, helps digestion

·         Dendrite agate (green, white) – protects the nervous system, protects against feelings of guilt

·         Druzy ice agate (clear) – protection for the immune system

·         Moss agate (green, blue, yellow, red, brown) – protects the birthing process and circulatory system against infection

·         Silver lace agate (brown, blue, green, yellow, white) – protects against energy drains

·         Snakeskin agate (blue, orange, red, white) – protects against karmic patterns (with a well-designed intention)

·         Tree agate (green, white) protects against negative emotions by bringing love energy into the chakras

Using agates requires a bit more patience than higher resonating quartzes. Agates have a unique spirit mind-body quality to help transform a negative mindset towards a more light-filled consciousness, an event whose guest can last a lifetime anyway. Jasper’s primary planetary influence is Jupiter, an air element that governs fortune (luck), learning, expansion and vision. Jasper’s trigonal structure makes it an energizing (exciting!) stone like other quartz varieties.

Visit a crystal apothecary shop and take note of the crystals you are naturally attracted to. Check to see if the crystals are on the above list. Muscle test for crystal compatibility. A positive muscle test result may indicate the Jasper crystal’s vibrational frequency will be helpful to your body’s elemental health.
