As most of my readers know, my personal, professional mission statement is to “write books that help others yield to the presence of God”. I’m sure that means different things to different people. When understanding the history of minerals however, there could be no clearer meaning of a power greater than ourselves that was/is responsible for the calcium that knits broken bones, the oxygen that fuels life or the magnesium that inspires the cognitive mind of us all.
Personally all my life I’ve taken for granted the air I breathe (oxygen), the copper that my water flows through and the silver I wear on my fingers. But did you know that every element on Earth (118 known so far to date) had their beginning in exploding massive stars, cosmic ray fission, dying low mass starts merging before Earth was even a twinkle in God’s eye?
Now a proven scientific fact, a “big bang” occurred in our Universe billions of years ago that released the known elements that helps Earth and every living thing survive, other than hydrogen, helium, and a touch of lithium. Let me say this another way. The 22 elements the body required for sustenance such as calcium, copper, iron, zinc, sulfur, carbon…well you get the picture, is the result of some cosmic explosion that resulted first in the creation of the solar system and then in every living thing with carbon as the key element in human DNA.
As I research and write Mineral Speak, the Language of Minerals (out spring 2023) I am literally blown away by the fact that every element on Earth is simply an atom with a unique number of electrons. Hydrogen has one electron. The next element on the Periodic Table of Elements is helium with two electrons, lithium with three electrons all the way to ununoctium with 118 electrons in its atom’s orbit. That in itself is amazing (and clever) but now I learned that all but the first three elements on the periodic table are a result of exploding massive stars, merging neutron stars, exploding white dwarfs and other cosmic anomalies that after exploding formed a series of planets, one of which captured all 118 elements (scientists are sure there are more yet to be detected), 22 of which make my body contract, expand, digest, excrete, etc. In fact, most disease or ill health ultimately boils down to an elemental “war in the body” (shortage of oxygen, too much copper, not enough calcium and so forth). Yes, even in the human body there are elements that “bully” other elements. Many environmental and self-inflicted factors (i.e. smoking, alcohol use, stress) lead to an imbalanced elemental structure in the human body.
So from massive star to a solar system to the human body. Sheesh! I dare you to tell me there’s not a power greater than ourselves whose divine design was and still IS at work. How can a mind, divine or not, come up with a plan billions of years ago that allows my body to breathe and process food full of minerals so that I may have energy to think and feel?
Enjoy that broccoli (potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium) but when you do, remember to give thanks to that power greater than yourself that you didn’t have to suffer through exploding stars and Cosmic Ray Fission to be able to host the 22 life giving elements.
AFFIRMATION: I host the perfect combination of minerals in my body.
