Service Minded

Red & Cream Lilly

Turning one's talents or gifts into something useful to the evolution of others is truly the real definition of service. Whether one's talents lie in the realm of making others laugh or helping others see truth, when one takes their talent into the world for all to experience, one is not only providing a service to others, but more importantly, gifting the planet with their service.

Let's talk about what service is NOT. Service is NOT about giving things away or doing something out of obligation, or my favorite…unconscious guilt. My husband is extremely charming. He is in the service of charm. My son is inherently funny. His service is to see a person hurting and, through humor, lighten their load. I'm a teacher. When a student appears, I go into service mode.

Sweetness – expressing it,  is of service. Compassion is a service. Being support-minded is a service. Regardless of the innate service that one can provide the collective, until one is in the midst of their service-minded purpose, their evolutionary progress is halted.

Everyone is blessed with some form of natural talent because "God don't make no junk." The Bible quotes a parable told by Jesus using "talents." Three people were given talents (in those days, talents were money) by their employer, who was leaving on a journey, with instructions to use them wisely. In the days of the Bible, a talent was almost equal to a week’s wage.  But metaphorically, Jesus used the word "talent" to represent the gifts and responsibilities one is gifted with (by God) at birth.

When the travelling employer returned, he assessed how his three employees (each receiving five, two, and one talent respectively) “grew” their talents. The third employee, fearful of losing the one talent he was gifted, buried it. Although this parable may initially appear to be about the stewardship of money, its deeper meaning is actually about hiding (in this case, burying) one's talent out of fear instead of utilizing it to bless the collective and let it multiply or grow. Naturally, the other two employees increased their talents in the absence of their master.

This minute…yep, right NOW, ask yourself how you are using your talent to be of service to the collective. Are you burying it in fear or multiplying your own blessings with it? As always, the choice is yours, but…

Every flower (talent) must eventually give way to fruit (one’s evolution). The only question is whether the fruit seed goes on to create more flowers or rots away.

AFFIRMATION: I am clear about my talent(s) and use them to bring light to the world in service.
