The Old Must Go First (Originally Published 12/15/2021)

One of my favorite parables in the Bible is one Jesus uses to urge his readers and followers to release the old in preparation for the new. Known as the parable of the wineskins, Jesus made it clear that one must “prepare” for the new.
In biblical times, wine was fermented in a leather pouch. Pouches used for wine fermentation stretched out as the wine expanded making the wine pouch unusable for future fermentation. In fact, to drive the point home about not reusing (the past) a wineskin, Jesus states that putting new wine in an already stretched wineskin will tear the wineskin and both the new wine and the wineskin will be ruined. Bible scholars claim that Jesus used the wineskin parable to help his followers release the teachings of the Law of Moses which required many layers of do’s and don’ts to achieve righteousness in God’s eyes and helped evolve the Christian philosophy that touts the practice of Love, Forgiveness, and Faith is what achieves righteousness in Gods eyes.
The New Year ushers in an energetic force of “newness” by its very nature. New, trimmer and healthier bodies are among the most common resolutions people make. Getting organized, save money, quit smoking and travel more also rank in the top ten. What are the old wineskins that need to be removed before new intentions (for some of us it’s the same new intentions year after year unfulfilled) can begin to properly ferment in one’s life? Every detail of a Jesus parable has meaning. After all Jesus could have just as easily said don’t sew shriveled material to new material. However, to make a strong point Jesus used something most every household did – make wine. Wine was a big deal in biblical times (not much has changed).
The real message of the wineskin parable is that new ideas, goals and intentions will not ferment or grow unless we also accompany the desired changes with a new mindset or beliefs about oneself. For example, one wants to quit smoking. Great intention for the new year. Smoking is a physical addiction. What new wineskin will one use to “ferment to success” a smoke-free existence? What aids (non-smoking gum, hypnotism, exercise, increase water intake, etc.) will become the new wineskin for fermentation of a non-smoking success?
The wineskin parable can be translated into every change one is seeking. Want a new, better relationship? The wineskin for relationships is one’s own mental and emotional thoughts and actions. Don’t think for a minute that you will attract healthier relationships to yourself until you replace some “old wineskin” reactions in new relationships.
When you decide on a New Year’s intention, also add some mental, emotional, and spiritual changes (wineskins) to the equation.
Affirmation: All of my intentions for the New Year include new ways of thinking and acting.
