Message of the Moth (Originally Published 2/4/2022)

If you are a regular to my blog site most likely you are aware of what a totem is. For you newbies, a totem is an animal, bird, reptile or insect that provides a message to one’s spirit designed to help or transform one into beings of light – the true human purpose for existence. For most of us there are usually 2 or 3 totems that consistently appear. As we evolve, totems can also change to provide new or deeper insight into oneself and the situations one faces.

The other day I noticed what I thought was a very large, discarded flower petal, about the size of a fifty-cent piece sitting on the deck table. I went to scoot it away when I realized it was a very large brown moth with a furry brown head and neck. One of my passions is insect photography. I had never seen this moth type before. I ran for my camera but soon learned there was no rush since Mr. Moth remained stalwart, claiming his place in my space for over 24 hours. Twenty-four hours for a moth to sit in one place, especially in daylight, clearly got my attention. My photos of Mr. Moth were not at all exciting since a moth’s true beauty is only revealed when the moth’s wings are opened.

Studying a totem’s lifestyle, quirks and reproductive habits can often give a hint of the message or change in perspective a totem’s visit is hoping one will heed.

Like butterfly, moths emerge from cocoons so anytime a butterfly or moth imposes itself in one’s electromagnetic field for a spell it usually signifies a change or transformation is on the way. For those of us who resist change, the moth can be a simple reminder to “go with the flow” of the change(s) before us.

Unlike butterfly who is solar-powered, moth is a nocturnal creature who is powered by the Moon. In fact, moth uses the light from the stars and the moon to navigate its way through the darkness to find food and to pollinate night blooming flowers. The Moon is associated with feelings and emotions. Moth reminds us to be mindful of how we are feeling.

Lastly, a moth’s beauty is revealed when its wings are open, unlike my short-term tenant was willing to share. To me, my lepidopterist messenger is reminding me to “spread my wings” so that my beauty whether in my writings or mentoring activities – are available for all to enjoy.

Affirmation:  As I spread my wings, I bring beauty to the world.

Postscript:  Here’s what I subsequently delineated from Mr. Moth’s visit: During the emotional transformation you are about to experience, go with the flow and use the change to experience the beauty of life by spreading my wings; be open to new ideas and challenges.
