Irish Freedom March (Originally Published 3/16/2021)

Religion seems to have its grips on most holidays and St. Patrick Day is no different.

Folklore tells us St. Patrick died on March 17, 1461.  Born in fifth-century Britain, St. Patrick was enslaved when he was sixteen and brought to Ireland where he is credited with introducing Christianity there.  Ireland is said to be the Emerald Isle, which may explain the use of green everything on March 17.  St. Patrick also famously used the three leaves of the shamrock to offer a visual reminder to Christians of the Trinity: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Originally considered a Roman Catholic holiday, St. Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in 1601 in St. Augustine, Florida.  In 1762, New York’s Irish immigrants had their first parade, which was actually a civil rights march for all intents and purposes.

A civil rights march by the Irish?  White people marching for equality?  Do you mean there were other prejudicial injustices in our country before Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march for racial equality?

Irish immigrants had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudices to find acceptance in the New World.  The first St. Patrick’s Day parade, known as the Green March, was designed to show New York the true collective, political power the Irish possessed.

Green beer is great. Corn beef and cabbage, a St. Patrick Day tradition, is fabulous. Wearing green, the color of love, is fun.  In addition to all the fun, let us all try to remember to remove ALL prejudices we have.  They aren’t just limited to skin color.  Prejudice comes in a bazillion forms and against a bazillion things: religion, wealth, (or lack thereof) culture, body size, political party, age, sexual orientation.

This St Patrick’s Day pick your favorite prejudice and create an intention to eradicate it from your vibrational being—permanently.  If we all picked just one personal prejudice to eliminate on March 17, 2021, think of the green Light (love) we as a collective could bring to the plant.  I can hardly wait!
