Education, Another Hot Political Mess (Originally Published 6/11/2022)

One of Covid’s wonderful trickle-down effects was an increased awareness of the educational systems that have been in place for decades used by state and local governments to educate America’s most valued asset…our children.

Let’s define education as it currently is and as it needs to be. Over the past one hundred years, teaching curriculums were established and children from ages five to eighteen were herded through standardized learning of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Those that “got it” were in the top one-half of the learners and those that didn’t were rated as “less than” the others. A terrible burden for one to carry the rest of their lives.

Example. My son, aged almost fifty is an excellent boat mechanic. Since where he lives has more boats per capita than any other place in the country, he does very well for himself. However, the road to his success was not paved with any helpful directional signals or guidance education. Was this a K-12 school faux pas? Not really.

Mark grew up with attention deficit disorder, known as ADD, now known as ADHD. Mark’s brain did NOT allow him to look at words and assimilate the meaning of the words. Mark’s brain DID however afford him an amazing mathematical genius which attributes to his mechanical acumen.

All through school however, Mark’s inability to assimilate words in sentences was embarrassing to him. To cover his inequity (there’s that new buzz word with a different meaning), Mark became the class clown of course irritating his teachers along the way. Mark never graduated from high school and spent his twenties thinking himself a failure which led to alcohol abuse, several stints in jail for drunk driving and an inability to function in the “earnings” world. Finally, around forty years old, Mark discovered his real talent as boat-motor-fixer-extraordinaire and sustains his lifestyle in grand fashion.

Forty years? Eek! Would life have been different for Mark if he wasn’t denigrated by his inability to read and instead his math and mechanical genius ability recognized? Iinstead of being forced to sit in History and English classes, been taught mechanics so that he could emerge at eighteen years old into the right career?

Why aren’t kids taught about banking and checkbooks and investments? Why aren’t simple manners taught? Why isn’t the concept behind selfless serving – community service projects for example not only required for graduation but also the reasons behind serving others taught?

Thanks to Covid, parents are now banding together and campaigning for change. The new Aquarian Age is said to bring about a huge shift in education. School unions are a huge force to contend with in this process. We’ve all seen how some school boards are on a power trip to protect their little fiefdoms from change. Without change, many more “Marks” of the world will end up becoming a drag on society living life in Jails. It costs the government more to house a criminal than to educate a student in a year.

Parents unite! Begin to think outside the box. Why can’t your mathematically-gifted, mechanically-minded, forensically-talented or medically-suited child be brought into the realm of their true talents in the public school system by the time they are twelve?

Change is scary. But so was life for Mark. Let’s embrace change for education. The old way doesn’t work for 70% of the kids in school. I am reading a lot about how education’s funding is changing. That’s not enough. Let’s scrap the old system and start from scratch. I don’t have all the answers but I do know change is happening. Even if you don’t have school age children in the home, the future IS our kids; future law-makers, engineers, restaurant owners and boat mechanics. A well-versed and well-trained society is guaranteed a place in the new world order, whatever that will look like.

Affirmation: I visualize a world where education is finely honed to a student’s talents.
